Description
We experimented with machined and anodized 7075 ejection port cover pins for our EPCs, there were times the steel pins the shot sourced had uneven finish, sometimes slightly bent, the shop made aluminum pins to circumvent these issues. We bought some, but eventually decided to continue using the steel pins once the QC problem was sorted out, as the 7075 pin substitution would further increase the cost of our EPCs.
The weight difference is quite noticeable (steel pin is 0.21oz, 3 times heavier than the 7075 pin) when measured individually, but our view of any single component is always in the context of the system. Taken as a whole, i.e. from the perspective as a system, 0.14oz of weight reduction for the AR1/M16 isn’t silly, we have never been on the lightweight bandwagon, especially when taken to the extreme where components and the entire firearm give up reliability and functionality for weight saving.
In this case, these 7075 pins are more than adequate for the job, we simply didn’t want to saddle EPC customers with the extra cost. Since we have no plans to incorporate them into EPC production, we’re making what we have made available. They are color matched to our 7075 EPCs.
